Arrested Development Movie to Film in Spring 2010?

Pretty much since the day after it was canceled in 2006, the criminally underseen Fox sitcom Arrested Development has had fans lobbying for, pining for, dreaming about and generally doing everything but sell their souls to secure the making of a feature feature film about the wonderfully idiosyncratic, surprisingly endearing Bluth family. Well, their dream has now taken a huge leap toward reality.

Earlier this year, the show's principal cast members -- Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Alia Shawkat, Jeffrey Tambor, Tony Hale, David Cross, Jessica Walter and even the elusive Michael Cera (long rumored to be the final holdout) -- confirmed that they'd reprise their roles for a film if creator Mitch Hurwitz could crank out a script everyone loved. With Hurwitz's busy schedule -- he was working on the animated sitcom Sit Down, Shut Up at the time, and is now prepping a new series for Arnett -- that was a big "if" ... until now.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hurwitz and his co-executive producer James Vallely are hard at work on a script for a big-screen Arrested Development movie that could start filming as early as spring 2010. While scheduling will have to be worked out with the principal cast -- especially those with booming movie careers such as Bateman and Cera -- this is a huge coup for a series that didn't exactly make the Nielsen ratings' honor roll.

But is this good news? Many believe that the series ended on a perfect note, with our hero Michael Bluth (Bateman) fulfilling a fantasy he considered in the series' pilot: sailing off into the sunset with his son George Michael (Cera) and leaving his leeching family (well, most of them -- you've to to watch out for those hop-ons!) behind. That said, the show was so consistently good, it's hard to imagine a movie not living up to our wildest dreams.

Arrested Development Script in Works

Narrator: Now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything ... and just may get some of it back.

Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz and his co-executive producer James Vallely are working on a screenplay for the long-debated feature version of their short-lived Fox series. Even as they prep a new Fox comedy series with Arrested star Will Arnett, the writers are spinning more bizarre encounters for the eccentric, spoiled Bluth clan for possible feature production in the spring.

Imagine, which produced the TV show, and Fox Searchlight are producing the film.

Hurwitz had said that he wouldn't start writing a film unless all the main actors, including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Arnett, Alia Shawkat, Portia de Rossi and Jeffrey Tambor, were committed. Earlier in the year, speculation circulated about which wanted to return as the show's hyper-invested fans pushed from the sidelines and the actors themselves spurred excitement.

Hurwitz and Vallely are now forging ahead. Scheduling might be difficult, however, as several -- Bateman, Cera and Arnett -- have seen their careers bloom in TV and film since the series debuted in 2003.

Director Ron Howard, who executive produced the series and provided the voice of the narrator, played himself in the final episode hearing a pitch of the Bluth story and suggesting it for a movie. Hurwitz, however, will direct the feature.

Hurwitz, who is repped by WME, and Vallely, who is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, won Emmys for their writing on Arrested. They work together on the animated Fox comedy Sit Down, Shut Up.

Jennifer Rudolph Walsh Mentions Portia's Upcoming Memoir

Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, Executive Vice President and Co-Head of the William Morris Agency’s Worldwide Literary Department, recently mentioned Portia's upcoming memoir in an interview with Variety.

Jennifer Rudolph Walsh knows how to book it
WME literary handler has a knack for bestselling talent

Ask Jennifer Rudolph Walsh how many times her clients' books have been selected to appear on "Oprah," and the co-head of William Morris Endeavor's worldwide literary department can only hazard a vague guess: "A lot. I've been very lucky."

But the 42-year-old New Yorker, who was hired by agent Virginia Barber one day after graduating from Kenyon College and wound up buying the company nine years later, will never forget the first time it happened, with "Drowning Ruth," the debut novel from Christina Schwarz, which also reached No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list.

"That was a game changer for me," says Walsh, a mother of three who is still married to her high school sweetheart. "It was a huge vote of confidence that I was on the right track."

Today Walsh is the only woman on WME's nine-member board, and her department boasts more NYT bestsellers than any literary agency in the world, with 61 titles in 2009 alone (a handful of which are thanks to Walsh's recruitment of star agent Eric Simonoff in March).

Her personal clients range from chick lit powerhouse Gigi Levangie Grazer to "Bones" author Kathy Reichs to Man Booker Prize-winning short story writer Alice Munro. Some of her most eagerly anticipated fall titles include new books from Reichs and Munro as well as Ken Burns' history of U.S. national parks, a prequel to Jeannette Walls' "The Glass Castle," and "Traveling with Pomegranates," a historical memoir by Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter Ann Taylor Kidd.

Walsh is also excited about the recent sale of Portia De Rossi's memoir, which will address her eating disorder and her coming out as a lesbian. "I think it's going to have an amazing impact on young women," she asserts.

Oh, and about her status as the sole woman on the WME board? Just give her some time. "I'll get some other females on there. I got that covered."

Better Off Ted DVD Set for Release December 1st

We posted news way back in May that Amazon.com had put up pre-order listings for Better Off Ted - Season 1 on DVD ($29.98 SRP) and Blu-ray Disc ($39.99 SRP). The studio, Fox Home Entertainment, had not formally announced the releases yet, though, so we didn't have a release date on those listings. And, in an fairly unusual twist, Amazon kept both listings up, but stopped taking advance orders on them.

Today Fox announced to retailers that Better Off Ted - Season 1 will arrive on DVD this coming December 1st. No Blu-ray format version was included in the announcement, just DVD; we're unsure at this time if this will come later, or if it means Fox changed their mind about a high-def release, or if Amazon perhaps was mistaken to list it in the first place. For now, the only release we have evidence of (notably per the studio description above) is on standard DVD format, on the first of December.

The 2-disc set will run 263 minutes, and the cost is confirmed to be at $29.98 SRP (CA$37.98 SRP in Canada). Video is widescreen, and audio options are English 5.1 Dolby Surround, and Spanish Dolby Surround. Subtitles are in English, Spanish and French. No bonus material was mentioned, other than promos of other Fox TV-DVD releases. We have the disc-by-disc episode breakdown for you below. Package art isn't available yet, but stay tuned!

Ellen DeGeneres Shares Anniversary Gift from Portia de Rossi

New American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres received a romantic first wedding anniversary present from her partner Portia de Rossi – a giant “One” drawn by a sky writer. Loved-up Ellen shared a photo of the “sweet” gesture with the audience of her US chat show. The lesbian star said: “Portia and I just celebrated our one-year wedding anniversary. That was nice.

"It was quiet, we had a little picnic. Not a picnic really, like a blanket and some wine. No blanket, wine. “All of a sudden we looked up in the sky and Portia had hired a sky writer to write ‘ONE’ in the sky. “Isn’t that sweet? “If anybody saw that, that’s for me!”
