Better Off Ted to Debut March 18th - 8:30PM

Better Off Ted is a new office comedy about successful good guy Ted who runs Research and Development at the morally questionable Veridian Dynamics. No achievement is too far-fetched and no invention too unorthodox for Veridian. Need cow-less meat grown in a test tube? Done. Need pumpkins that also double as weapons of mass destruction? No problem. Ted's a single dad to a seven-year-old girl and he loves his job, but he's starting to take a closer look at the company's extremely dubious practices. Do you manufacture the best teeth whitener ever if it could also kill off all of the planet's fish? Probably not, but... Ted's also fighting an attraction to co-worker Linda, who enjoys small acts of rebellion against Veridian (she's secretly stealing and hoarding all the company's creamer packets). But he holds back about his true feelings. He's already had his self imposed "one office affair" with berboss Veronica. Incredibly beautiful (if seemingly devoid of conscience and emotion-free), Veronica lets nothing get in her way when it comes to serving Veridian's needs.

Better Off Ted stars Jay Harrington as Ted, Portia de Rossi as Veronica, Andrea Anders as Linda, Jonathan Slavin as Phil and Malcolm Barrett as Lem. Isabella Acres appears in the recurring role of Rose, Ted's daughter.

Better Off Ted will premiere at 8:30PM Wednesdays, starting March 18.
It will follow Scrubs, which moves to 8PM Wednesdays, also starting March 18.

After answering questions about her marriage, Ellen, Arrested Development and Better Off Ted, Portia also took some time to reveal her new project - designing a line of vegan shoes.

Actress Natalie Portman also launched a line of vegan footwear, until late last year when parent company Té Casan announced it was going out of business.

Ellen DeGeneres Chats About Her Pets

Ellen is featured in a new article for People Pets, discussing her and Portia's animals and her recent endorsement of Halo Purely for Pets. For the full interview, click here or read on for all the Portia-related parts.

How many pets do you have and what are their names?
I have two dogs and three cats. The dogs are Wolf and Mabel and the cats are Charlie, George, and Chairman.

How old are all of them and what breed are they?
Mabel is, she just turned eight … She's a standard poodle and then Wolf [he’s] probably three and a half now. He's kind of a poodle-Maltese mix and he's a rescue off of the street. And all three cats are rescue and they are probably anywhere from four to seven or eight. It's hard to tell their ages. They were full-grown when we got them so we don't know how old.

Do all of your pets have very distinct personalities?
Of course! All animals have distinct personalities; they're all very different. Mabel looks like she was a show dog and walks like she is a show dog. She's actually more attached to Portia than she is to me. She's very much attached to Portia and Wolf is just a sweet dog, needy for love from anybody. And all the cats are slightly different. They all have their different personalities. Charlie has a dog personality where she has to be wherever people are and follow you from room to room.

How do your pets fit in to your everyday routine?
The dogs usually go with Portia, she rides horses and she rides everyday and they get their exercise with the other dogs that go and we walk them and take them on hikes. The cats just get lots of attention and lots of love at home. There is no special routine but I can't imagine life without them. I come home and no matter how tired I am it feels good to get that unconditional love.

Where do they all sleep now?
Most of them sleep in the bedroom with us. The dogs, they have dog beds and there is one cat that sleeps with us and the other two have their own little areas in the house. They sleep wherever they want. The dogs are on the dog bed in the bedroom and the cat sleeps with us and two sleep wandering around.

Portia de Rossi Talks Better Off Ted

The upcoming ABC comedy, Better off Ted, centers on the staff of the huge, intimidating, and morally questionable company Veridian Dynamics, through the eyes of Ted (Jay Harrington), who is starting to realize maybe his company isn't exactly doing things the right way.

The cast and creators were on hand at the Television Critics Association press your, and executive producer Victor Fresco (Andy Richter Controls the Universe) explained, "I relate to the environment of working for people who don't care about you. It's universal for people who've had jobs."

Playing Ted's tough boss is Arrested Development's Portia de Rossi. Asked what drew her to the role, de Rossi first began to say, "I'm really attracted to strong women." De Rossi, who of course is famously in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres, then stopped herself and laughed, saying, "Let me rephrase that actually. I'm attracted to strong, female characters."

In the show, Veridian does some very bizarre things in their lab, and Fresco said many of those things are inspired by real science, noting that there's an upcoming episode where, "They're coming up with an idea of how to make beef in a lab. That's something technology is currently working to deliver for us." And as for a major plot point in the first episode, where one of the company's scientists, Phil (Jonathan Slavin), is frozen as part of a cryogenics experiment, Fresco noted, "We haven't frozen anyone [living] yet, but I don't think we're far from it."

The show clearly delves into some outrageous territory, but Fresco said he wanted to explore, "Human relationships and how people react when they're in a stressful environment," and that it was precisely that "they would so matter of factly accept that their company chose to freeze one of their employees" that appealed to him, as it reflected, "The acceptance that people have in a crazy environment."

Asked if there were similarities between her Ted character, Veronica, and Lindsay from Arrested Development, de Rossi said there were some, but it was her character from Ally McBeal that was more similar. She recalled meeting with Fresco, "and I was talking about Ally McBeal, assuming he had seen it… He hadn't." Said Fresco with a smile, "I'd heard of it!"

De Rossi laughed over the fact that since Fresco had not seen the character that she felt he could relate to Veronica, "I kind of had to throw myself at him. I told him I'd played this character who had similar qualities, very work driven, strong, insensitive, slightly chilly. I had to convince him I could play this character well and could play a character of this nature." With a "what can you do?" amused tone, she then added, "So he made me audition."

She added that she felt ultimately, Veronica, "is funnier than the character I played on Ally. There's a similarity, but the dialogue is crisper and funnier. I'm Australian. I grew up watching the BBC, and comedians like John Cleese. I get a sense of that kind of absurdist, hyper real [tone] to my character."

Harrington was asked if his character would ever fully rebel against the company he works for, but Harrington said that despite the things they do, "There's a trust factor. I think he likes the challenge to much to ever want to crack. He's pretty cool under the pressure, but we'll see." Fresco then noted that the cast hadn't seen the next script, and revealed, "Actually, in next week's episode, Ted does crack."

Portia de Rossi is a Changed Woman Thanks To Marriage

A few more reports on Portia at the 2009 Winter TCA Press Tour yesterday have surfaced online, including the following one from People. I've also added 21 new images of Portia at the event to PortiaPhotos.

Five months after her wedding to Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi is declaring that marriage has "completely changed my life."

"Marriage is a different way of being together," the actress told PEOPLE Friday while promoting her upcoming ABC series Better Off Ted at the Television Critics Association event in Pasadena, Calif.

Even though the couple have been together since 2004, tying the knot strengthened their bond. "There's a peace to [being married] and a sense of togetherness that we just didn't have before. And I didn't even realize it would change as much as it has, but it's so lovely," said the actress.

"It's legal, and it's real, so there's that kind of formality to it that makes it very valid," added de Rossi. "I think the emotions that went with that as a gay woman kind of surprised me – that I would be that relieved to have my mother be present at the ceremony to bless the union, and to call [Ellen] her daughter-in-law.”

The actress said she's also emerged as a more confident woman in recent years, both in her life and her career. "It's so important to live an honest, open life and I didn't really realize that until I started doing it," she said.

De Rossi also holds out hope that other gay and lesbian couples will ultimately be able to enjoy the right to be legally married, a right that was repealed in California last fall shortly after their nuptials. "Every day of our lives is a protest against the passing of Prop 8," she said. "We're a happily married couple. It was kind of devastating, actually, when it passed."

One element of their post-wedding life de Rossi isn't looking forward to is taking the hot seat as a guest on DeGeneres's daytime talk show, which she will "unfortunately" do to promote her new series.

"I say 'unfortunately' because it just seems like a very awkward kind of interview. She'll make it flawless, and I'm excited to talk about the show," she said. "I just hope she doesn't ask any personal questions. That's off limits!"

But doesn't her spouse already know all the intimate personal details? "No, she doesn't," de Rossi said laughing. "That's what I'm worried about. She could ask anything she wanted."

Portia is IN for Arrested Development Movie!

After numerous reports on the state of the Arrested Development movie, all of which attached Portia to the project without any confirmation that she had signed on, Portia revealed today that she WILL be a part of the big screen adaptation of the show.

Speaking at The 2009 Winter TCA Press Tour, Portia said "I don’t think it’s fully green lit, but it’s definitely happening according to Mitchell Hurwitz.” Hurwitz himself revealed a few days ago that “we have a deal more or less in place from Fox Searchlight, and we’re kind of getting the actors on board".

Portia also spoke about new show Better Off Ted, revealing that her role as Veronica is her favorite part ever - even moreso than the vain Lindsay on Arrested Development.

She revealed: "I’m really attracted to strong women ... let me rephrase that, I’m really attracted to strong female characters.”

Portia at The 2009 Winter TCA Press Tour

Entertainment Tonight have also posted a short interview with Portia at the event, discussing the wedding and married life, and their vegan lifestyle.

- Do you think Ellen will pop up on your show?
I think there is more chance of me popping up on her show. Unfortunately, I say unfortunately because it seems like a very awkward kind of interview. She will make it flawless. I am happy to talk about the show, so I am happy to go on her show and talk about it, I just hope she won't ask any personal questions. That is off limits.

- But she knows all the answers?
No, she doesn't. (Laughs)

- What are you going to do for your wedding anniversary?
It is going to be something that I can do for Ellen, because she took care of the anniversary of us being together last year and it was amazing. I want to do something special, so if you have any ideas, let me know.

- How has marriage changed your life?
It is a very different way of being together. There is a peace to it and a sense of togetherness we didn't have before. I didn't realize it would change as much as it has, but it is so lovely.

- What was unexpected about marriage?
The ability to get married legally and to have my family, my mother especially, when I say the word wife, because it is legal and so there is that kind of formality to it, that makes it very lovely. We are very much a partnership and team. That wasn't surprising, but the emotions that went with that as a gay woman -- that I would be that relieved to have my mother be present at the ceremony and bless the union and to call Ellen her daughter-in-law.

- Any plans for Valentine's Day?
A lot of pressure today. I tell you what happens with our lives. We have our anniversary of when we got together, then we have Christmas, her birthday, my birthday and then Valentine's day and by the end of that whole thing, we are exhausted and broke.

- Why did you decide to become vegans?
We just made that shift in our lives. The benefit of it is weight loss. For her more than me. Her body responded to it very well. It is amazing. We are just both very happy. It feels like such a compassionate choice. We are such animal lovers, why stop short of cows and chickens? It didn't make any sense.
When Ellen and I first got together I was wearing fur and Ellen was wearing very expensive Italian calfskin leather. She was giving me a hard time about wearing the fur and I said, "Why is a fox any more important than a cow?" We took that idea and went all the way with it. We are doing what we can. We still have some leather.
