Australians in Action - Portia de Rossi

A new article on Australian actors and actresses in mainstream American TV has been added to Star, where they discuss the likes of Julian McMahon, Rachel Griffiths, Rose Byrne and, of course, Portia.

Be charmed by the wave of Australian talent sweeping US television. They are waltzing to Tinseltown and into our living rooms.

For the past years the American entertainment sphere has been impacted by amazing talent from the land Down Under. Crowe and his compatriots Mel Gibson, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, the late Heath Ledger, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush, Nicole Kidman and Isla Fisher have added a huge boost of style, ruggedness and glamour to Hollywood.

In the TV-scape, too, the Australians are proving to be an asset. Here, we take a look at 14 hardworking Australians (in no particular order) who are (or have been) regulars in our living rooms.

Portia de Rossi (Better Off Ted) – It is unfortunate that her acting skills have been unjustly overshadowed by her marriage to the successful American comedienne and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. A quick glance at her resume will tell you that the 36-year-old star from Victoria has a knack for quirky TV roles such as those on the series Ally McBeal, Arrested Development and currently, on the office comedy Better Off Ted. At 15, she changed her name – Amanda Lee Rogers – to Portia de Rossi as she struggled to find her identity and come to terms with her sexuality. She was 20 when she auditioned for her first role, in Sirens, a low-budget comedy starring Hugh Grant and Elle McPherson.

PortiaPhotos - 1994 Robin Sellick Photoshoot

I have replaced the 4 tagged images already in PortiaPhotos, from Portia's 1994 shoot with Robin Sellick, published in 2005 in Australia's Who Magazine, with the untagged versions. The photos were taken in a friend's kitchen in Bondi in Sydney, Australia - the friend appears to have a newspaper clipping of Portia on the fridge! Click the links below to view.

Tony Hale Wants Buster Bluth's Hook Again

ChicagoNow has a brand new interview with Portia's Arrested Development co-star Tony Hale, where he discusses the upcoming movie - no major news on the state of the project, but it's nice to know everyone is still on board.

Tony Hale is ready for the Arrested Development movie.

"I want to wear Buster's hand again," he told me during a phone interview on Thursday. "I want to wear the hook again." Hale was on a call with journalists promoting his new Web series at nbc.com, Ctrl, but I had to ask him about the film version of the cult TV series in which he played Buster Bluth, the socially inept and panic-attack prone youngest Bluth brother whose left hand was bitten off by a seal.

"We all want it to happen," he said of the cast members and the show's creator, Mitchell Hurwitz. "It's just a matter of getting everybody's schedule together. Everybody's kind of doing their own thing."

He said coordinating the schedules of so many cast members - Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Will Arnett, Jeffrey Tambor, David Cross, Alia Shawkat, Portia de Rossi, Jessica Walter and Justin Lee - is 'kind of a feat."

"But we're definitely all on board and the script is supposedly in the works," he said. "We all want it to happen, so we'll see - hopefully."

No Emmy Nomination for Portia

Emmy nominations were announced this morning, and Portia was overlooked for her work on both Better Off Ted and Nip/Tuck. Portia had a lot of support online for her role as Veronica in Better Off Ted, unfortunately these didn't translate to the members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The actresses that made the cut are below - if Portia can't win, our support is going to Jane Krakowski. Click here for the full list of nominees.

- Jane Krakowski as Jenna Maroney in 30 Rock
- Kristin Chenoweth as Olive Snook in Pushing Daisies
- Amy Poehler as Various Characters in Saturday Night Live

New Upcoming Better Off Ted Episode Promotional Stills

Ever since Portia's appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in March, fans have been eagerly anticipating the Better Off Ted episode in which Veronica's secret life as a magician's assistant is revealed. The episode won't air until the beginning of August, but we have exclusive promotional stills from the episode, titled 'Secrets and Lives', and one from another new episode 'Jabberwocky' added to PortiaPhotos. Read the new episode descriptions below, and click the links to view the images. Again, thankyou to Amelia for getting hold of these photos for us.

Jabberwocky - When Linda hears that Veridian is going "green," Ted can't bear to tell her it's just another empty promise. He makes up a non-existent project, code named Jabberwocky, to secretly divert funds so Linda can build a rooftop garden. The problem is, people at Veridian start to believe Jabberwocky is real and want in on what they think is the company's hottest project - Tuesday July 28th.

Secrets and Lives - A new Veridian invention accidentally reveals buttoned-up Veronica's surprising "secret" life. Meanwhile, Linda decides that if Ted won't date her, she's going to fix him up with her old roommate, Rebecca - Tuesday August 4th.

The 61st Annual Emmy Awards - Nominees Announced Tomorrow!

Nominees for The 61st Annual Emmy Awards will be revealed tomorrow - the nominations ceremony airs live at 5:35am PST on news and entertainment outlets everywhere, and will be streamed live at The Official Emmys Website.

Portia has been submitted in the categories of Comedy Series for
Better Off Ted / Supporting Actress - Comedy Series for her role as Veronica in Better Off Ted / Drama Series for Nip/Tuck and Guest Actress - Drama Series for her role as Olivia Lord in Nip/Tuck. A number of websites and blogs are supporting Portia, especially for her work on Better Off Ted.

Better Off Ted: Try as I might, I can't convince any of my friends or family members to tune into ABC's delightfully warped workplace comedy. Is it the title? Is the fact that ABC's decision to run fresh summer episodes feels more like burn-off than hot stuff? All I can say is that an Emmy nod might help folks get hip to a crisply written show featuring creepy corporate-advertising parodies, guffaw-worthy science-based punch-lines, and hilarious turns by Portia de Rossi as an icy boss-lady and Jay Harrington as a genial middle manager.

Michael Slezak @ Entertainment Weekly

Better Off Ted: It was probably on for too short a time in the spring to really catch on (modest ratings won't help either). But Ted was the rare example of a comedy that was sure of itself almost from the very start. If the show itself doesn't get a nomination, it would be especially gratifying to see Portia de Rossi nominated for best supporting actress.

- Rick Porter @ Zap2It

Best Supporting Actress - Comedy
Portia de Rossi (Better Off Ted)

de Rossi has a habit of appearing on quirky comedies (see: Ally McBeal, Arrested Development), but her ice queen boss takes the cake.

- Palais @ Dance to the Music of Time
